What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is caused by a sudden back-and-forth movement of the neck that results in excessive forces applied to the neck. This snapping motion can injure neck muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissue structures. It is common in car accidents, especially when the driver or passenger is unaware of a pending collision, such as a rear end accident. Common injuries from a whiplash include:
- Muscle strains and ligament sprains
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Joint irration
- Nerve injuries
Even though whiplash primarily affects the neck, the effects can extend to the shoulders, upper back, and even lead to symptoms like headaches or dizziness

How We Treat It
Each case is different and identifying injuries is key
If you have been involved in a car accident, one of the first things you should do is undergo an examination by a medical provider. In many whiplash cases, symptoms of pain or dysfunction do not occur for multiple days or sometimes weeks after the accident. Proper examination and imaging, such as x-rays and MRI when clinically warranted, can help identify signs of a whiplash and possible injuries. Conservative treatment aims to decrease pain, promote soft tissue healing and improve functionality. Our doctors will also make recommendations on things you can do at home, such as the application of ice and/or heat.
