What Causes Neck pain?
Proper Evaluation & Diagnosis is Key
Neck pain can be caused by a variety of factors. Muscle strain/tension, whiplash injuries, degenerative conditions, and nerve-related issues are common causes of neck pain. Excess screen time and poor work station ergonomics are common factors, as well. Proper diagnosis through orthopedic testing, thorough history, and radiological evaluation are necessary for reduction of neck pain. Most musculoskeletal related neck complaints respond quickly to chiropractic care.
Common Symptoms of Neck Pain
Neck pain can cause problems in other regions of the body, such as the shoulder blades, arms, and hands.
The neck, or cervical spine, contains 8 pairs of spinal nerves that travel into the shoulder and upper arm regions. These nerves control touch & feel from your neck to your finger tips. Each nerve controls a certain aspect of your skin, called a dermatome, along with certain muscles. Symptoms of a pinched nerve in the neck often times includes neck pain and pain or numbness into the arm/hand. Not all neck pain symptoms have a neurological component.
Localized pain in the neck can come from joint restriction, muscle tension/tighness, and degenerative conditions. Often times, chronic neck pain is accompanied by tension type headaches that occur where the neck meets the back of the skull.
